Light therapy

The core treatment of what we now term “Seasonal Affective Disorder” (SAD) is light therapy, using new technology which produces a light source which we commonly refer to as “daylight” or “full spectrum” light.    Just like any other treatment device, light therapy devices are used for specific prescribed times that are generally limited to approximately 20 to 30 minutes exposures,  once or twice daily.   Living as we do above the 49th Parallel it is often thought that our susceptibility to SAD is at least partly a result of the shortened daylight hours through the Winter months.   For some time we referred to the feelings of low interest, lack of energy, various sleep disorders and mild depression, as the “winter blues”.

Day-Light

The Day-Light products are used in the treatment of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).  SAD is a type of recurrent depression which some people suffer from especially during fall and winter, this is more common in northern latitudes where the number of daylight hours are fewer.  People who can benefit from using this technology would include anyone who experiences the following symptoms and is not exposed to a lot of daylight: feelings of depression, loss of energy, fatigue, moodiness, excessive sleeping, loss of sex drive, social withdrawal and/or weight gain.  While it is most commonly used during winter months, someone who regularly suffers from a sleep disorder can benefit from using the Day-light through out the year.  Other users of the Day-Lights are those who work shift work, travel extensively and/or those who suffer from PMS and Antepartum Blues.

The Day-Light products are recommended for the treatment of SAD because they provide 10,000 LUX outdoor light level in the comfort of the user’s home or office.  Day-lights produce white-light that is UV filtered so it is safe for your eyes and skin.  They come with stands that adjust in height and are available in two sizes to accommodate the needs of the user.  The Day-Light Classic is the larger of the two products and can be used either with the built-in stand or adjustable legs; it also is angle adjustable and comes with a carry-handle.  The Day-Light Sky is the smaller and more discreet option.  It is versatile as it can be height adjustable for therapeutic use or used as a task lamp.  Both products come with a five-year limited warranty and replacement bulbs are also available.  The treatment time is only 20-30 minutes daily.
